8:00 AM – Pick-up from your Guangzhou hotel
Your private English-speaking driver and guide will meet you at your Guangzhou downtown hotel. You will travel in a clean, air-conditioned private vehicle. The drive to Shunde, a district of Foshan city and a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, takes about one hour. Use this time to learn about Shunde’s reputation as the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine and many martial arts legends.
9:00 AM – Qinghui Garden Museum (清晖园博物馆)
Your first stop is Qinghui Garden, one of the four most famous classical gardens in Guangdong province. Built during the Ming Dynasty (around 1607) and expanded in the Qing Dynasty, this garden was originally the private residence of a top imperial scholar. Today it also serves as a museum, displaying ancient furniture, calligraphy, and porcelain inside its historic pavilions.
As you enter, you will notice the clever use of space. The garden is not large, but every turn reveals a new surprise: a lotus pond with bright koi fish, a rockery made of rare Taihu stones, a zigzag bridge that forces you to slow down, and moon gates that frame perfect views. Your guide will explain the meaning behind the garden‘s name – “Qinghui” means “pure and bright” – and point out the famous double-faced embroidery and the 200-year-old jacaranda tree.
Wander through the shaded corridors and imagine the literati life of ancient scholars who wrote poetry and painted landscapes here. The museum is quiet in the morning, making it a peaceful start to your day.
10:30 AM – Foshan Huagai Road特色 Culture Street (佛山花盖路特色文化街)
Next, you will drive approximately 30 minutes to Huagai Road in central Foshan city. This pedestrian street is a beautifully preserved piece of old Foshan. The architecture is a mix of late Qing dynasty arcade buildings and early 20th-century shop-houses with European-style balconies. Unlike touristy fake streets, this is a real local shopping and walking area where Foshan residents go to buy tea, traditional snacks, and daily goods.
You will have free time to explore. Look for the bronze sculptures along the street that show old Foshan trades – a barber, a sugar painter, a blacksmith. Smell the roasting chestnuts and sesame cakes from small family stalls. You can try local specialties such as double-layer milk pudding, shrimp dumplings, or Foshan fried milk (at your own expense). This is also a great place to watch elderly locals practicing tai chi in small plazas or playing Chinese chess under banyan trees.
Your guide will point out the remnants of old city gates and explain how Foshan became one of China’s four great ancient towns alongside Hankou, Jingdezhen, and Zhuxian.
12:30 PM – Jin Gong Men (金拱门) – A Local McDonald‘s Experience
This might sound unusual, but hear us out. “Jin Gong Men” literally means “Golden Arch” – and it is the official Chinese name for McDonald’s in mainland China since 2017. Why include a McDonald‘s on a cultural tour? Because Shunde people, famous for being picky eaters, have actually made this local McDonald’s a destination. Some outlets here serve limited-edition items you cannot find anywhere else, such as spicy chicken wings with Shunde black bean sauce or seasonal taro pies.
Your guide will take you to a clean, modern Jin Gong Men branch (specific location may vary depending on traffic and opening hours). This stop is lighthearted and fun – you can order using a self-service kiosk in Chinese (your guide will help), try a local breakfast or lunch item, and experience how global brands adapt to local tastes. It‘s a short, playful break before heading to the waterfront. Meal cost is at your own expense.
Note: If you prefer not to eat at McDonald’s, there are small noodle shops nearby – your guide can suggest alternatives, but the scheduled stop remains at Jin Gong Men per the itinerary.
1:30 PM – Shunde Ronggui Fisherman‘s Wharf (顺德容桂渔人码头)
After lunch, you will drive 40 minutes south to Ronggui, a historic fishing town within Shunde district. The Fisherman’s Wharf is a revitalized industrial waterfront area. Not long ago, this was a working pier for grain storage and sugar refineries. Today, it has been transformed into a charming promenade of colorful warehouses, art murals, old fishing boats, and relaxed cafes.
As you walk along the wharf, you will see massive concrete silos painted with giant octopus and fish murals – perfect for photos. Old rusty mooring bollards and retired fishing nets are kept as decorations. The contrast between industrial heritage and artistic renewal gives this place a unique atmosphere, similar to warehouse districts in Melbourne or Tokyo‘s waterfront.
Your guide will share stories of how Ronggui fishermen once sailed to Southeast Asia and how the Pearl River Delta’s fish trade shaped local cuisine. You have free time to sit by the river, watch barges slowly pass, and sip a coffee at one of the waterside stands (own expense). If you are lucky, you may see local grandmas selling dried fish and shrimp paste – a true taste of old Shunde.
4:00 PM – Return drive to Guangzhou
After a relaxing hour at the wharf, your driver will take you back to your Guangzhou hotel. The journey takes about 1.5 hours. Arrival time is approximately 5:30 PM, depending on traffic. Say goodbye to your guide with a camera full of memories – from a classical scholar‘s garden to a fisherman‘s wharf turned art space.
