The Tomb of the King of Nanyue Museum

The Tomb of the King of Nanyue Museum

1. Historical background:

The Museum of the King of Nanyue is a large-scale site museum based on the important archaeological remains of the Nanyue Kingdom. It is divided into two exhibition areas: the Tomb of the King and the Palace. The Tomb of the King is located at No. 867 North Jiefang Road. It was formerly the Museum of the Nanyue King of the Western Han Dynasty, which opened in 1988; the Palace is located at No. 374 Beijing Road. It was formerly the Nanyue Palace Museum, which opened in 2014.

The Tomb of the King is centered on the Tomb of the King of Nanyue, which was discovered in 1983. The tomb is the highest-level, largest, and best-preserved Han Dynasty painted stone chamber tomb in Lingnan. More than 1,000 pieces (sets) of cultural relics were unearthed from the tomb, including the "Emperor Wen's Seal" gold seal, horn-shaped jade cup, and silk jade clothing, which have important historical value. The Tomb of the King of Nanyue is known as the "Light of Lingnan Culture".

2. Main exhibition area:

The original site protection area of the tomb of the King of Nanyue: The cover of the original site of the ancient tomb is made of steel frame structure and coated blue flat glass material, and is made of the bucket-shaped earth-covering shape of the Maoling Mausoleum of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. It is a rain and sun protection shed. Entering the protection shed, you can see the upper structure of the tomb and the backfill rammed earth. There is a passage leading to the tomb in the middle, connecting the front room of the mausoleum, and visitors can go down to the tomb directly to observe.

Comprehensive exhibition building: The comprehensive exhibition building is located at the front of the museum entrance. There are two red sandstone walls made of more than 1,300 pieces of red sandstone at the door. It is 12 meters high and 35 meters wide. The comprehensive exhibition building covers an area of 4,396 square meters and has three floors. The first floor is the service desk, visitor center, VIP room, video data hall, souvenir sales hall, etc. On the east side of the second floor is a special exhibition of Tibetan pillows donated by Mr. Yang Yongde and his wife Ms. Yang Zhangruizhen. The rest of the exhibition halls on the second floor and the third floor are used for temporary exhibitions, and short-term exhibitions will be replaced from time to time.

Special exhibition of pillows donated by Mr. and Mrs. Yang Yongde: The east side of the second floor of the comprehensive exhibition building is permanently set aside as a special exhibition of pillows donated by Mr. and Mrs. Yang Yongde. The special exhibition of pillows donated by Mr. and Mrs. Yang Yongde is more than 200 ceramic pillows donated to the Museum of the Nanyue King of the Western Han Dynasty by Mr. Yang Yongde, a Hong Kong connoisseur, industrialist, honorary citizen of Guangzhou, and honorary curator of the Museum of the Nanyue King of the Western Han Dynasty, and his wife, Ms. Yang Zhangruizhen. The pillows are displayed in 29 display cabinets according to the era and kiln, and all the pillows from the Tang Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty are included.

Main exhibition building: Outside the exit of the original site protection area of the Nanyue King's Tomb is a small square of the main exhibition building, on which there are three small pyramid-shaped blue glass light sheds imitating the Louvre in Paris. The main exhibition building is located on the north side of the museum, with a total area of 4,262 square meters, with two floors and five exhibition halls.

Special thanks to my guide, Sofia. It's really hard for me to find a Spanish tour guide. She is professional and I have a good understanding about the China culture under her guide. During the Xi'an trip, I was shocked by the strong atmosphere of culture. I hope I can go next time, really love it.

Independent travel by train in China…
Independent travel by train in China can be daunting ordeal. We decided to use Intoexplore for booking the trip and are very happy we did. It almost felt like Norman was a family member guiding us through how to use Alipay for payments in China to where to find the ticket office in the train station to convert digital tickets to paper. He was always available (sometimes at 6 am!) to answer any question and solve any problems that arose .. I would strongly recommend him to anyone who is thinking about independent travel to China .
