Daily Itinerary(Choose One of Four Packages) Daily Itinerary(Choose One of Four Packages)

Package A:Underwater Museum+River Gallery+816 Project(Best for History&Engineering Fans)

9:30 AM–White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum(白鹤岭水下博物馆)

Your first stop is one of China’s most unusual museums. The White Crane Ridge is a 1,600meterlong stone ridge that once stood above the Yangtze River, covered with more than 160 ancient inscriptions–some over 1,200 years old.But when the Three Gorges Dam raised the river level by 100 meters, the ridge was submerged forever.Instead of losing it,China built an underwater museum. You will descend in a glass elevator through a 90meterlong underwater tunnel, walking through a pressurized steel gallery to view the original stone carvings through thick acrylic windows.Hydrological records carved by ancient officials are still visible–they used the ridge to measure seasonal river levels. It feels like walking inside a scifi movie set,but it is 100%real history preserved beneath 40 meters of water.

11:30 AM–River Gallery Cruise(河流画廊)

After the museum, you will drive to a nearby pier for a short River Gallery boat ride(approximately 40 minutes). This stretch of the Wu River is famous for its karst peaks, bamboo groves, and cliffside villages.Unlike the crowded Yangtze cruise, this is a quiet, intimate experience.Your guide will point out rock formations that look like elephants, monks, and swords.Keep your camera ready–the reflections on the calm water are postcardperfect.

12:30 PM–Lunch break(at your own expense)

Your guide will take you to a local Fuling restaurant where you can try Fuling pickled mustard tuber(a famous Chongqing specialty),river fish, and spicy noodles.Or grab a quick snack from a roadside stand.

1:30 PM–816 Project Nuclear Site(816工程)

This is the highlight for Cold War enthusiasts. The 816 Project is a declassified underground nuclear reactor complex, built in absolute secrecy during the 1960s.Over 60,000 soldiers and engineers carved a massive city inside a mountain–20 kilometers of tunnels,18 large caves, and halls as tall as an 8story building. The project was abandoned in 1984 when the Cold War ended, and it only opened to the public in 2010.You will walk through the reactor core hall, air filtration rooms, and control centers, all left exactly as they were. The guide will explain how this“underground Great Wall”was meant to produce plutonium for China’s atomic bomb. The scale is breathtaking–you will feel like a character in a spy thriller.

4:00 PM–Return drive to Chongqing

After exploring the bunker, your driver will take you back to your Chongqing hotel(arrival around 6:00 PM).

Package A:Underwater Museum+River Gallery+816 Project(Best for History&Engineering Fans) Package A:Underwater Museum+River Gallery+816 Project(Best for History&Engineering Fans)

9:30 AM–White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum(same as Package A)

11:30 AM–River Gallery Cruise(same as Package A)

12:30 PM–Lunch(at your own expense)

1:30 PM–Gongtan Ancient Town&Wujiang Art Museum(拱潭古镇武江美术馆)

Drive 50 minutes to Gongtan Ancient Town,a 1,800yearold riverside settlement that was relocated brickbybrick to higher ground before the Three Gorges Dam flooding. The town is a maze of stone streets, wooden stilt houses, and old clan temples.Unlike commercialized tourist towns,Gongtan is still home to real Tujia and Miao minority families. You will see grandmas embroidering, old men smoking bamboo pipes, and drying chili peppers on rooftops.Inside the town, visit the Wujiang Art Museum,a small gallery showcasing paintings and calligraphy inspired by the Wu River landscape. The museum is housed in a restored Qingdynasty merchant’s home. After a short visit, you have free time to walk the ancient wharf and take photos of the dramatic gorge view.

4:00 PM–Return to Chongqing

Package B:Underwater Museum+River Gallery+Gongtan Ancient Town&Wujiang Art Museum(Best for Culture&Scenery) Package B:Underwater Museum+River Gallery+Gongtan Ancient Town&Wujiang Art Museum(Best for Culture&Scenery)

9:30 AM–White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum

11:30 AM–River Gallery Cruise

12:30 PM–Lunch(own expense)

1:30 PM–Wuling Mountain Grand Rift(武陵山大裂谷)

Now for something completely different. The Wuling Mountain Grand Rift is a dramatic crack in the earth’s crust, stretching 10 kilometers long and plunging up to 300 meters deep. You will walk along a suspended plank path bolted to the cliffside, cross swinging bridges over roaring waterfalls, and pass through narrow“onesky”fissures where the rock walls are only a meter apart. The air is cool and filled with the sound of birds and rushing water. The full loop takes about 2 hours of moderate walking.Your guide will share local legends–according to Tujia folklore, this rift was created when a dragon clawed open the mountain to escape. The green moss, hanging vines, and hidden pools make it feel like a lost world.

Honestly, I had a mix of nerves and excitement before this trip. My friends back in Mumbai thought I was crazy – "China? Really?" But I'd been staring at photos of those floating Avatar mountains for years, and I just had to see them for myself. So I booked the Zhangjiajie + Furong Ancient Town package through IntoExplore, and wow, I'm so glad I did.

Very helpful “Into Explore”
I first came across Into Explore while browsing travel reels about China on social media, and their content really stood out. I reached out with a few questions and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly Norman got back to me. To be honest, I was a bit cautious in the beginning—booking something like this online always comes with some uncertainty—but after several conversations and reviewing the proposed itinerary, I felt comfortable proceeding and placed an initial deposit. We traveled as a family, and from start to finish, the experience was incredibly smooth. Norman was flexible, patient, and always accommodating whenever we needed adjustments. Communication was consistent and reliable, which made a big difference. Once we landed in China, everything was handled flawlessly. The planning, coordination, and daily flow of activities were all executed with great attention to detail. We always knew what to expect the next day, which made the entire trip feel effortless and well-managed. Overall, it turned out to be a fantastic experience. I would confidently recommend Into Explore—and Norman in particular—to anyone considering a trip to China.

Very helpful “Into Explore”
I rarely write reviews, but this time I’d like to share my overwhelmingly positive thoughts about this trip. From the day I contacted this company, they have been very attentive and friendly. They did a great job planning my family holiday and supported us every step of the way. They put together a 14-day private tour for us, taking into account all our requests and requirements. In every city we visited, there was a reliable driver, a very nice car, and a guide to assist us throughout the day. I was initially anxious about traveling in a country where people don’t speak much English, but the guides made everything effortlessly convenient, including helping us choose food in local restaurants without English menus.I could go on describing all the wonderful things we saw in China, but to keep it short, I would simply encourage prospective customers to set aside any doubts and trust this company with their holiday planning. Thank you, guys!

Fast respond, helpful
Independent travel by train in China can be daunting ordeal. We decided to use Intoexplore for booking the trip and are very happy we did. It almost felt like Norman was a family member guiding us through how to use Alipay for payments in China to where to find the ticket office in the train station to convert digital tickets to paper. He was always available (sometimes at 6 am!) to answer any question and solve any problems that arose .. I would strongly recommend him to anyone who is thinking about independent travel to China .
